Background

Higher order thinking (HOT) involves meaningful learning to transfer knowledge, critical thinking with reasonable, reflective thinking on decision making and problem solving that includes recall, critical thinking, creative thinking and effective communication (Bransford & Stein, 1984); Brookkhart, 2010; Norris & Ennis, 1989).

In this rapidly changing world, government and private sectors, educators, and learners at all levels are confronted with challenging situations and the way forward demands HOT skills.  In this response, many countries are investing heavily in education that brings about HOT.

This National seminar on the “Development of HOT” with the theme: “Engaging and Modelling HOT for Nation Building” is the first seminar jointly organised by the Department of Mathematics and Science Education, Faculty of Education, University of Malaya (UM) and the Faculty of Education and Languages, HELP University (HU).

This seminar aims to:

1. analyze and explore current  innovative experiences by researchers and educators on issues related to HOT

2. identify practical methods and models of implementation and integration of HOT in teaching and learning at all levels of education from pre-school to post-graduate studies.

3. discuss and explore current educational curriculum, assessment strategies and research related to the development of HOT

4. explore implications, key policies and strategies on the development of HOT for Nation Building.
